Empty Nest As 3 Furbies Ride Away

Well, this Monday morning got up early (for me) at about 0730, did my chores in town and on the way back I stopped at a local U-Haul dealer. I had reserved a small 10 foot truck and a 4 wheel car carrier for pick up that morning. Our youngest who is 27 was moving out to live with her girl friend in North Carolina. So, we rented the equipment, put our car on the trailer and she drove her van there with her two cats. We left our home about noon and got to the town about 2100. The plan had been that my wife booked a room on Motels.com at Days Inn for $84. We would spend the night there then Tuesday morning we would get the car off the trailer, drop the trailer at the local U-Haul dealer 1/4 mile away, go to the apartment and have the truck unloaded, then return it. Simple plan that didn’t work that way. When I opened the door of the Days Inn room and turned on the light I watched the roaches scatter. We got the money refunded with no problem and I just drove straight back home getting here at 0330 on Tuesday morning.

I have to admit that for some reason I was in a foul mode all day, my fault, I made that last day with our daughter different than it should have been. Later I figured it out I think, I lost my youngest son in June, now 4 months later losing another child, and her 2 cats. Our daughter had lived in our downstairs apartment since we bought this place back in the summer of 2015. She brought with her a Tom Cat now about 9 1/2 years old, for 5+ years now that big fat fur ball became my buddy as well as our daughters. A little over two years ago we inherited two female kittens. One of the kittens who is a big hairy girl is my wife’s now, the other female kitten is simply tiny and sweet, our other cat is a huge black Tom who we picked up as a kitten right after we moved here, so he is 5 1/2 now.

So, the daughter is gone, the basement is now empty. On a ‘like’ meter of 1 to 4 with the cats, our kid left with my number 1 and number 3 cats. It does seem different here, hollow, quiet. Now my nearest kid is 350 miles away, my nearest grandchild is about 505 away, now I will either start to feel old, or maybe, spry, who knows. Thank you for your time, I hope you enjoyed my little story.
